Latest Free Microsoft Certification Exam

Sorry for the late notice, but I’ve just been informed that there’s a free Visual C++ 2005 certification exam available (#71-526). While this is a “beta” exam and is only good until January 31, it does count towards certification in the same way as the final version of the exam. Note that the exam can be taken using Visual C++, Visual C# or Visual Basic - you specify your desired language when the exam begins.
The story here is that Microsoft Certification has launched a “new generation of certifications” consisting of two distinct series of credentials for .NET Framework developers:

Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) - The MCTS credential highlights your ability to develop Windows, Web, or distributed applications using the .NET Framework 2.0 and Visual Studio 2005.
Microsoft Certified Professional Developer (MCPD) - The MCPD credential highlights your job role, featuring your specific area of expertise and allowing you to distinguish yourself as an expert in Windows Development, Web Application Development, or Enterprise Applications Development.
To explain how these exams fit together the bigger picture:

Exam 70-526 (the “final version” of this exam”) is one of two exams required for the “Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist: .NET Framework 2.0 Windows Applications” (MCTS) credential. To achieve this credential you will also need to pass exam “70-536: TS: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 - Application Development Foundation”.

After achieving the MCTS credential for Windows applications, you will be able to achieve the “Microsoft Certified Professional Developer: Windows Developer” (MCPD) credential by passing one additional exam: “70-548 PRO: Designing and Developing Windows-Based Applications by Using the Microsoft .NET Framework.”

Special Notes
Please be aware of the following:

Promotional Code and Exam Number - The exam number is 71-526 and the promotional code is TSB526
Passing the exam - Candidates who take and achieve a passing score in the beta exam will receive a free exam voucher for any Microsoft Certification Exam. Vouchers will be sent after exam scores are tabulated.
Restrictions - The beta exams are not offered in China, India or Pakistan. Please don’t waste your time sending me emails about this issue as I have no control over it.

WSUS is not properly patching computers, Microsoft says
Microsoft Security is warning IT customers that Windows Server Update Services 3.0 Service Pack 1 is not properly installing patches on machines that also have Office 2003 installed — or even just components of Office 2003 installed. In addition, this problem may occur for systems that also have the following products installed: Windows Small Business Server 2003 (Windows SBS) with the WSUS component upgraded from WSUS 2 to WSUS 3, System Center Essentials 2007, System Center Configuration Manager 2007.

Ironically, the problem is that the patch Microsoft Security issued on June 30 to fix exactly this problem — WSUS’s failure to work — is itself faulty. According to the Microsoft Security blog, that WSUS fix “does not correctly elevate privileges, which are required for the installation to complete. …Additionally, the update does not place an entry in Add or Remove Programs, and cannot be uninstalled. Microsoft has identified the packaging inconsistencies in the current update and is investigating options to resolve them.”

Microsoft has issued a patch to fix the patch of its automatic patching system. It has also identified and documented a manual workaround for those that can’t install the patch. Information on the new WSUS update and the workaround can be found here.

Microsoft Training Microsoft Certifications

As of late last week, you can officially use exam 70-621 (upgrading from MCDST to MCITP) in place of 70-620 (Vista Configuring) anywhere it is allowed in a certification track. If you do not know what Ia??m talking about, then you do not care about thisa???dona??t stress yourself out.

You can tell it is official, now, because we posted it to our web sites (see note in a??Credit toward certificationa?? sections, on prep guides linked below) and Ia??m told is reflected in your transcripts, etc. as of Friday morning. The gist, per this old post, is that 70-621 earns MCTS: Vistaa???and as such you should be able to use 70-621 to fulfill a 70-620 or MCTS: Vista requirement in another certification track. Spread the word to your MCDST peers and peerlets.

Customers who have taken both of these will be getting an e-mail from Microsoft Learning sometime this week, explaining the situation.

Speaking of things that can be used as other things, Ia??d like to point out the cert merchandise featured in this montha??s MCP newsletter: an MCSE-branded Speaker Vase.

As it turns out, it is just speakers shaped like a vase. I guess. But I spent a bit of time staring at it, wondering about the use for speakers that are also a vase, and thinking that it would be difficult to top for efficiency.

Unless we are talking about an MCSD-logo sweater, that can also be used as a white board, or a chain-saw, or something.
